SEMA(Specialty Equipment Market Association) show celebrated its 50th anniversary in style with some of the finest examples of aftermarket tuning from around the globe. The Intersection team was there to experience it all at the epicenter of where creativity, design, and engineering come together to create the building blocks of performance, style, and beauty.

The show featured vehicles from purebred racecars to streetcars to off-road beasts that could charge over practically anything. Each of the halls where packed wall to wall with many interesting and unique solutions to fit almost any driver’s particular needs, wants, or desires.

While roaming the floors we met with a number of companies and learned about their new lines, features, in some cases revolutionary tech. Ford displayed their 24 hour of Le Mans winning GT still sporting the carnage, dirt and grime from the race, while Toyota opted to show newer modified models with some beautifully restored classics illustrating their roots. By far a highlight of every SEMA is the roll out at the end where the best in show awards are announced, followed by all of the vehicles rolling out before being loaded up and heading back to their homes. After the rollout it is advised to head over to the strip where some of the show cars do laps all night and put on a little show of their own.

The 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show was as spectacular as always and the Intersection team was there to take it all in and experience all of the incredible new models and concepts from renowned marquees such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar, and Alfa Romeo to spectacular new start-ups like Divergent 3D who made a big splash.

For this years show the connected car expo, and the press and trade days were merged to form the AutoMobility trade show. The merger fostered a connection between many diverse fields to create a new automotive ecosystem to explore new ideas in the future of mobility.

The 2016 Design and Developer Challenge is always a highlight of the show. Here teams of auto designers, entertainment brands, and software developers look to the future and imagine what is in store for the passengers of autonomous vehicles in 2050. This glimpse of the future offers visitors the opportunity to experience a variety of visions for the future of transportation under the umbrella of fully-autonomous drive.

The expert judges this year were comprised of a variety of high ranking members across the community and included Chris Down- Senior Vice President & Global Brand General Manager, Hot Wheels at Mattel, Inc., Danny Stillion- Partner & Executive Design Director at IDEO, Gabriel Schlumberger- Executive Director of Creative at Disney Consumer Products & Interactive Media, John S. Couch- Vice President of UX & Design at Hulu, Richard Titus- Senior Vice President of Customer Experience at Samsung Research America, Stewart Reed- Transportation Design Department Chair at Art Center College of Design, and Margarete Wies- Head Holistic User Experience at Volkswagen AG. The judges were told to consider the following when considering each of the concepts creativity, exterior/interior form/function, adaptability/customization, delivery/integration of content and its effect on the journey, use of current tools/tech available to designers, ability to see and interact with the environment, feasibility of the concept to enter the marketplace within the given timeframe, feasible revenue/business model, overall user experience, concept reflects the brand of the team, and the vehicles place on the road within a multimodal city.

Our team was impressed and intrigued by all the show had to offer like always and are anxious to see what awaits for at the show in 2017.
